PLANNING & DEVELOPMENT OF A WEBSITE
Outline
You have agreed to develop a website for a new client, Alicia Sparks, which enables Alicia to promote her shop
and provide online services for customers. See MSYS121_221-15S Website Assignment Brief file for details.
Based on the brief you have been provided you must design a suitable website structure that also demonstrates
your understanding of websites and (some) Web 2.0 technologies such as blogs, forums etc.
This company, while presently successful, does not know much about web design and what to include on the site
and therefore, you must use your creativity and knowledge to develop a site structure which covers all the
essentials stated in the Assignment Brief. The marking schedule below should be used as a guide, as it outlines
requirements in detail.
A: Concept Design and Planning (50%)
You need to show evidence of the thought, planning and research which needs to take place before the website
building begins, in the form of a website specification document. This specification should be used to guide
development of the design, and to ensure that the final design meets the client’s requirements as closely as
possible. In this section you must:
· Outline the goal of the site.
· Outline the expected user groups of the site.
· Show evidence of Internet research (provide a list of at least 4 comparable (in design or content) web
sites visited, along with their screenshots) and comment on the design elements CRAP (contrast,
repetition, alignment and proximity) for each.
· Present the website structure outlining how you developed the structure of the site from your research
and analysis.
· Prepare an Asset Inventory for the website (see Practical 2 for discussion of website assets).
In addition to the website specification you will also need to produce a separate summary document to show
justification and reasoning behind your design element choices, explaining why you would use certain text,
colours, fonts, design layouts and graphics. (Refer back to your Asset Inventory)
In practice this would be developed in close consultation with your client. For the purposes of this assignment,
however, we assume that what you have provided does clearly reflect your client’s needs.

B: Visual Design (50%)
In this section you will show the visual design of the ‘Sparks Copy’ website. To do this, you will need to use a
drawing application, such as, Paint, Adobe Photoshop, MS PowerPoint etc., so that you can clearly show the use
of colours, font, design etc. You may choose to use a website builder such as Yola for this; however you will not
be assessed on the functionality of the website.
You are required to:
· Design all the web pages using your choice of application
· Show use of colours, fonts, design elements etc.
· Add in the content for each webpage
You need to show that your final visual design matches your concept planning and design and is relevant and
suitable to the client’s specifications. Your design must:
· Contain more than two web pages, but no more than 12 pages.
· Contain a form that customers can fill in to request Sparks Copy services.
· Include any relevant Web 2.0 technologies based on the background information and the brief provided.
· Make reasoned and appropriate use of design elements taught in the practical sessions.
· Use the information provided in the brief for the content of the site. You are not limited to this
information, although any content added must be reflective of the type of organisation which you are
designing for.
For a better mark in this assignment you need to provide a substantial amount of explanation and justification for
the included design elements.

ESSAY: THE IMPACT OF E-COMMERCE ON CONSUMERS: IS IT
A BETTER WORLD?
Essay Topic
The Internet and E-commerce have undoubtedly changed the face of business, especially for consumers. For
thousands of years, consumers have interacted with retailers face-to-face. E-commerce has changed that in many
ways, especially in more developed economies where reliable Internet services are normal.
Structure your essay in two sections, separately addressing each of these two points:
1. Explore how consumers now do business. Specifically, discuss differences for the consumer between the
traditional B2C environment and that of the E-commerce B2C environment. Include the topics of marketing,
payment and after-sales service in your discussion. (40%)
2. The expected development of ubiquitous computing (the Internet of things, etc.) and other trends in e-
commerce will undoubtedly affect our lifestyles and our culture. In what ways do you believe that because of
these developments, the world will be a better place? In what ways do you believe it will not be a better
place? Argue your view, with clear reasons and examples. (60 %)
Guidelines
· The word limit is 2,000 words, and a word-processed word count must be given at the end of the
assignment. You can write less than 2,000 words, but not more. Aim for about 800-1200 in each section.
· Do some wider reading (and/or Internet browsing). When you use any material that is not your own, you
must reference it, using APA style. If you copy and paste material from the Internet, Turnitin will know and so
will I and you will probably end up in front of a University Disciplinary Committee regarding plagiarism.
· Therefore, write this essay in your own words, not those of the texts/articles you have read.
· Write concisely, and where appropriate use tables, diagrams and bullet points to highlight important
information.
Your answers should be based on course content and further research you have done. Your answers should show
evidence of thought and research. Use examples and references to support your statements. And take care to
follow the marking guideline below.
